Ibiza Castle's Archaeological Open Day

You probably know that Ibiza castle is being converted in a state run parador hotel, and you probably also know that during the works many valuable archaeological finds have been made - a few weeks ago we featured the discovery of what could be the first city of Ibiza and a Roman temple in Spotlight News.

The other day an 'open day' was held for press and dignitaries to view the whole range of remains from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors which have been unearthed during the project.

Here, courtesy of the Diario de Ibiza is the Roman Temple

The paper has a whole gallery of photos which you can study at leisure

Chocolate Heaven in Ibiza

I imagine that nearly everyone knows of the religious orders around the world which produce really famous food and drink to help raise income for the monastery. Brandy, wine and beer are probably the most well known of the products produced by monks and here in Ibiza there's a similar scheme in action at the Monastery of San Cristobal (St. Cristopher) in Dalt Vila.

The nuns there, their order is the Canonesas Regulares de San Agustín, make cakes and pies to sell to the public from their 'shop' above the chapel in Calle Sant Ciriac (next to the shrine of Sant Cyriac) in the winding cobbled streets of the old town.

Founded in 1599 in Ibiza, it received a boost in 1600 when nuns from the order of San Agustin in Palma arrived to help set up the convent and the Mallorcan influence can still be seen today in the food that the nuns make. Cocarrois and rubiols are still Mallorquin favourites even now.

The nuns follow the 'rule' of San Agustin based on the core activities of love, prayer and liturgical life, and communal living in poverty, obedience and chastity.

The chapel that they use is simple but well worth a visit, and if you're in Ibiza with your radio you can tune in to Radio Maria on 104.8 FM to find out what's going on.
